When it comes to fashion trends, there are many and most of them only last for several years...hence 'trends'. Back when I was in high school, circa the early 2000's...you were doing it if you had an authentic jersey or a Mitchell & Ness throwback with the matching fitted cap and Jordans/Nikes. To pull this off, you would need to invest in quite a bit of money. Also I used the term 'invest' very loosely.
If you were to dress like that now, you would look outdated to the 10th power. As of now, the 'in' trend is skinny jeans...yes even the no so skinny fellas wear them. Combined with a fitted hat or a snap back, and a 'street wear' top. Bright colors are a plus. But how long will it last? Trends like to mediate between the extremes.
BUT if you opt for the more under the radar look, it will never go out of style. This is when the rule of 'less is more' can really be applied. I used to stride for clothes with brands plastered all over so I would appear to be cool and be with the in crowd. The problem is that when it becomes uncool, you need to stop wearing the clothes ASAP.
But if you stick with brands that are low key, and dress more mildly, no one would ever suspect a thing. Here is what I'm talking about. For a guy, a sport/dress shirt will never be out of style. The only factor is the cut...which can be fixed quickly by visiting the local tailor.
Compared a relatively bummy guy like Al Bundy to a page from this month's GQ magazine. You can spend $20 or so on Al's shirt to have it more fitted by a tailor and throw on a tie to pull a similar look to that of the GQ one. Mind you that Al's picture has to be at least 12 years old since the show stopped in 1996.
Also, it doesn't hurt dressing like this because it makes you look presentable and as they say...first impression is everything.
